Acrylonitrile is a colourless, flammable liquid. Its vapours may explode when exposed to an open flame. Acrylonitrile does not occur naturally. It is produced in very large amounts by several chemical industries in the United States, and its requirement and demand are increasing in recent years. Acrylonitrile is a heavily produced, unsaturated nitrile. It is used to make other chemicals such as plastics, synthetic rubber, and acrylic fibres. It has been used as a pesticide fumigant in the past; however, all pesticide uses have been discontinued. This compound is a major chemical intermediate used in creating products such as pharmaceuticals, antioxidants, and dyes, as well as in organic synthesis. The largest users of acrylonitrile are chemical industries that make acrylic and modacrylic fibres and high-impact ABS plastics. Acrylonitrile is also used in business machines, luggage, construction material, and manufacturing of styrene-acrylonitrile (SAN) plastics for automotive, household goods, and packaging material. Adiponitrile is used to make nylon, dyes, drugs, and pesticides.
Acrylonitrile is used in the production of acrylic fibers, resins, and surface coating; as an intermediate in the production of pharmaceuticals and dyes; as a polymer modifier; and as a fumigant. It may occur in fire-effluent gases because of pyrolyses of polyacrylonitrile materials. Acrylonitrile was found to be released from the acrylonitrile–styrene copolymer and acrylonitrile–styrene–butadiene copolymer bottles when these bottles were filled with food-simulating solvents such as water, 4% acetic acid, 20% ethanol, and heptane and stored for 10 days to 5 months (Nakazawa et al. 1984). The release was greater with increasing temperature and was attributable to the residual acrylonitrile monomer in the polymeric materials.
Acrylonitrile is a raw material used for synthesis of many synthetic fibers such as Dralon and acrylic fibers. It is also used as an insecticide.
Manufacture of acrylic fibers. In the plastics, surface coatings, and adhesives industries. As a chemical intermediate in the synthesis of antioxidants, pharmaceuticals, dyes, surface-active agents, etc. In organic synthesis to introduce a cyanoethyl group. As a modifier for natural polymers. As a pesticide fumigant for stored grain. Experimentally to induce adrenal hemorrhagic necrosis in rats.
At present, the most valuable industrial production is propylene ammoxidation. Propylene, ammonia, air and water are used as raw materials and enter a fluidized bed or fixed-bed reactor at a certain proportion. Under the action of phosphorus-molybdenum-bismuth or antimony-iron catalysts supported by silica gel, acrylonitrile is generated at 400~500 ℃ and atmospheric pressure. Then the unreacted ammonia is removed by dilute sulfuric acid through the neutralization tower, and the gas such as acrylonitrile is absorbed by water through the absorption tower to form an aqueous solution. The aqueous solution is separated from acetonitrile through the extraction tower, and the hydrocyanic acid is removed in the dehydrocyanization tower. After dehydration and rectification, the acrylonitrile product is obtained. The one-way yield can reach 75%, and the by-products include acetonitrile, hydrocyanic acid and ammonium sulfate.
Precautions for operation: strictly seal, provide sufficient local ventilation and overall ventilation. The operation shall be mechanized and automated as much as possible. Operators must receive special training and strictly abide by the operating procedures. It is recommended that operators wear self-priming filter gas mask (full face mask), one-piece rubber anti-gas clothing and rubber oil-resistant gloves. Keep away from kindling and heat sources. Smoking is strictly prohibited in the workplace. Use explosion-proof ventilation system and equipment. Prevent steam from leaking into the air of the workplace. Avoid contact with oxidants, acids and alkalis. Handle with care to prevent damage to packaging and containers. Provide fire fighting equipment and leakage emergency treatment equipment of corresponding types and quantities. Empty containers may contain harmful substances.
Precautions for storage: usually the commodity is added with stabilizer. Store in a cool and ventilated warehouse. Keep away from kindling and heat sources. The storage temperature should not exceed 26 ℃. The package shall be sealed and shall not be in contact with air. It should be stored separately from oxidants, acids, alkalis and edible chemicals. It should not be stored in large quantities or for a long time. Explosion-proof lighting and ventilation facilities shall be adopted. It is forbidden to use mechanical equipment and tools that are easy to produce sparks. The storage area shall be equipped with leakage emergency treatment equipment and appropriate storage materials. The "five double" management system for extremely toxic substances should be strictly implemented.
