Vinyl acetate monomer (VAM) is a colourless liquid, immiscible or slightly soluble in water. VAM is a flammable liquid. VAM has a sweet, fruity smell (in small quantities), with sharp, irritating odour at higher levels. VAM is an essential chemical building block used in a wide variety of industrial and consumer products. VAM is a key ingredient in emulsion polymers, resins, and intermediates used in paints, adhesives, coatings, textiles, wire and cable polyethylene compounds, laminated safety glass, packaging, automotive plastic fuel tanks, and acrylic fibres. Vinyl acetate is used to produce polyvinyl acetate emulsions and resins. Very small residual levels of vinyl acetate have been found present in products manufactured using VAM, such as moulded plastic items, adhesives, paints, food packaging containers, and hairspray.

PRODUCTION METHOD

(1) Acetylene method: synthesis of vinyl acetate by acetylene gas phase method: raw materials of acetylene gas phase method are acetic acid and acetylene. There are many by-products in the synthesis of vinyl acetate by this method. The main reaction equation is exothermic, C ₂ H ₂+CH ⏴ COOH → CH ⏴ COOCHCH ₂. The synthesis section is the catalytic synthesis of vinyl acetate from acetylene and acetic acid in a fluidized bed reactor through activated carbon zinc acetate. The separation section liquefies the high-boiling acetic acid and vinyl acetate in the synthesis gas and separates them from the non-condensable gas acetylene, nitrogen and carbon dioxide.
(2) Ethylene method: ethylene gas phase oxidation method: ethylene gas phase oxidation method is dominant due to its excellent process economy. Ethylene gas phase oxidation method is the reaction of ethylene, acetic acid and oxygen in the gas phase to produce vinyl acetate. Pd-Au, Pd-Pt, Pd-cd supported catalysts are used, and the supports are mainly SiO  and Al  O . Ethylene gas phase oxidation process includes fixed bed and fluidized bed processes. Fixed bed process: the active components of the catalyst used in the fixed bed process are mainly concentrated in the shell of the carrier, namely the so-called eggshell catalyst. The general preparation steps include impregnating the carrier with Pd and Au solution, precipitating Pd and Au with alkali, reducing Pd and Au with reducing agent, washing and drying, and finally impregnating and drying with alkali metal solution. The single-pass conversion of ethylene and acetic acid is 8%~10% and 8%~20% respectively. Fluidized bed gas phase process: The fluidized bed process for preparing vinyl acetate from ethylene, acetic acid, and oxygen includes: adding ethylene, acetic acid (gas phase) into the fluidized bed reactor, oxygen entering the reactor through another pipe, ethylene/acetic acid and oxygen mixing in the reactor, and producing vinyl acetate under the action of catalyst. The active components of the catalyst used in the fluidized bed are basically the same as that of the fixed bed, but mainly concentrated between the shell and the inner layer, namely the so-called protein-type catalyst. The fluidized bed process overcomes the disadvantages of catalyst cumulative deactivation, uneven heating and oxygen content limitation in the fixed bed.


MAIN DERIVATIVES

Vinyl acetate is mainly used to produce polyvinyl alcohol and EVA. Vinyl acetate (Vac), a simple ester of saturated acid and unsaturated alcohol, can be polymerized by itself or with other monomers to produce polymers such as polyvinyl alcohol (PVA), vinyl acetate-vinyl copolymer (EVA), etc
