PRODUCT OVERVIEW

Propylene oxide, also known as propylene oxide, methyl ethylene oxide and 1,2-epoxypropane, is an organic compound with chemical formula C3H6O. It is a very important raw material for organic compounds, and is the third largest propylene derivative after polypropylene and acrylonitrile. Propylene oxide is a colorless ether-flavored liquid with low boiling point, flammable and chiral. Industrial products are generally racemic mixtures of two enantiomers. Partially miscible with water, and miscible with ethanol and ether. It forms a binary azeotropic mixture with pentane, pentene, cyclopentane, cyclopentene and dichloromethane. Toxic, irritant to mucous membrane and skin, can damage cornea and conjunctiva, cause respiratory system pain, skin burn and swelling, and even tissue necrosis.

APPLICATION AREA

1. Epoxy propane can be used as wetting agent, emulsifier, bactericide, plasticizer, detergent and surfactant;
2. Propylene oxide is used to prepare propylene glycol, propanal, isopropanolamine, synthetic glycerol, organic ester, etc,
3. Epoxy propane is used to manufacture polyurethane foam and polyether.
4. Epoxide propane is an important raw material for organic synthesis, which is used to manufacture propylene glycol, allyl alcohol, propionaldehyde, synthetic glycerol, organic acid, synthetic resin, foam plastic, plasticizer, surfactant, emulsifier, wetting agent, detergent, bactericide, fumigant, etc.
5. Epoxy propane can be used as solvent for cellulose acetate, cellulose nitrate and resin.
6. Epoxy propane reacts with ammonia to produce isopropanolamine (monoisopropanolamine, diisopropylamine, triisopropanolamine), which is alkaline and can absorb acidic gas, and is widely used for gas purification, such as desulfurization and CO2 removal in the synthetic ammonia industry.

PRODUCTION METHOD

1. Chlorohydrin process
This process uses propylene and chlorine as raw materials, and adopts chlorohydrination, saponification, rectification and other processes. First, add excessive propylene into the mixture of water and chlorine gas, and generate chloropropanol through chlorohydrination reaction. The remaining propylene and hydrogen chloride and some organic chlorides (dichlorolactane, etc.) generated in the reaction process are discharged from the top of the reactor, and then condense to remove hydrogen chloride and organic chlorides. Recycle the propane burner for recycling, and produce chloropropanol solution containing 4% hydrochloric acid at the bottom of the reactor. Then add saponifying agent (the improved chlorohydrin method uses caustic soda to replace the lime milk saponifying agent of the traditional chlorohydrin method) to saponify the chloropropanol to generate crude propylene oxide, which is sent to the distillation tower for separation and purification to obtain propylene oxide product. The production process of chlorohydrin method is divided into chlorohydrin unit, saponification unit and distillation unit.
Process features: mature technology, short process, low investment, most of the reaction equipment adopts tubular reactors, low manufacturing cost, high selectivity and yield, low requirements for propylene purity, and large operating flexibility. However, chlorine consumption is large, and hypochloric acid produced in the production process seriously corrodes the equipment. At the same time, a large amount of high-temperature salt-containing wastewater and lime slag (traditional chlorohydrin method) discharged in the production process seriously pollutes the environment.
The modified chlorohydrin method uses dilute alkali solution instead of lime milk to saponify with chloropropanol at 100~105C and atmospheric pressure. This method can effectively inhibit the occurrence of saponification side reaction, reduce the production of propylene glycol, and improve the selectivity and yield of propylene oxide
2. Co-oxygenation process
The raw materials of this process are propylene, ethylbenzene and oxygen. In the first step, ethylbenzene and excess air are oxidized in the liquid phase to produce ethylbenzene peroxide, and then concentrated; In the second part, propylene and catalyst are added to epoxidize with ethylbenzene peroxide to produce crude epoxide and phenylethanol; The third step is to obtain propylene oxide product through separation and purification; The fourth step is to add acidic catalyst to the phenylethanol solution for dehydration reaction to generate the by-product styrene (SM), about 2.2t styrene per ton of propylene oxide produced. The by-product acetophenone generated in the system is reduced by adding chlorine to generate acetophenone, and the alcohol returns to the upstream seat.
The process flow is long and complex, the operation pressure is high, the variety of raw materials and intermediate products is large, the quality of propylene is high, the equipment cost and construction investment are large, and it is suitable for large-scale enterprises. Although the corrosion of equipment caused by chlorohydrin process is overcome, the amount of sewage produced is small, but the COD value of sewage is high, and the treatment cost accounts for about 9% of the total investment. Due to the mutual restriction between the source of raw materials and the sales of co-products, the advantages of this process can only be shown when the market demand of propylene oxide and co-products match. Because the produced co-products share the processing cost of this method, the co-production of styrene products can be carried out according to the requirements of the industry, and the construction in areas with large demand for styrene can also highlight the advantages of this process

PRECAUTIONS FOR PROTECTION

Epoxy propane can be packed in dry, clean and well-sealed galvanized iron drums, with a net weight of 150 kg each, or transported by special tank cars, which shall comply with relevant safety regulations. Epoxy propane shall be stored in a cool, ventilated and dry place below 25 ℃, and shall not be directly exposed to the sun and isolated from fire sources.
