Methyl isobutyl ketone, abbreviated as MIBK, is a colorless or light yellow oily liquid. Melting point 12.39 ℃ (11 ℃), boiling point 211.9 ℃ (213-214 ℃), 84.3 ℃ (1.33kPa), relative density 1.2483 (20/4 ℃), refractive index 1.5662. Flash point 87 ℃. Slightly soluble in water, soluble in ethanol, ether, acetone and benzene. It has a strong aldehyde smell.

PRECAUTIONS FOR PROTECTION

Store in a cool and ventilated warehouse. Keep away from kindling and heat sources. The warehouse temperature should not exceed 30 ℃. Protect from direct sunlight. Keep container sealed. It shall be stored separately from oxidant. The lighting, ventilation and other facilities in the storage room shall be explosion-proof. Fireproof and explosion-proof technical measures shall be taken during tank storage. It is forbidden to use mechanical equipment and tools that are easy to produce sparks. Handle with care to prevent damage to packaging and containers. APPLICATION AREA

1. MIBK is used as solvent and dewaxing agent of lubricating oil;
2. MIBK is used as standard material, solvent and extractant for chromatographic analysis;
3. MIBK is used as an intermediate of rodenticide
4. MIBK is used as spice. It is mainly used to prepare rum, cheese and fruit essence.
5. MIBK is used as mineral processing agent, solvent for oil dewaxing, and color coupler for color film
6. MIBK is used as solvent for tetracycline, pyrethroid and DDT, adhesive, rubber glue, and mask paint for aircraft and models.
7. MIBK is used in organic synthesis industry
8. MIBK is used as anticoagulant and diluent of vinyl resin.


PRODUCTION METHOD

The traditional production method of MIBK is acetone three-step method. In the first step, two molecules of acetone generate one molecule of diacetone alcohol (DAA) under the action of alkaline catalyst; In the second step, a molecule of DAA is dehydrated under the action of acid catalyst to produce isopropylidene acetone (MO); In the third step, MO generates MIBK under the action of selective hydrogenation catalyst.
The specific reaction formula is as follows:
Step 1: 2CH3COH3 → (CH3) 2COHCH2COCH3 (1)
Step 2: (CH3) 2COHCH2COCH3 → (CH3) 2C=CHCOCH3+H2O (2)
Step 3: (CH3) 2C=CHCOCH3+H2 → (CH3) 2CH2COCH3 (3)
The technology of one-step synthesis of MIBK from acetone was industrialized in 1968. At the end of the 1960s, Germany Texaco developed a new type of catalyst, which has the functions of condensation dehydration and hydrogenation, so that the above three-step reaction is completed in one step. First, two molecules of acetone are condensed and dehydrated on the acid center of the catalyst to generate MO; Then, MO is rapidly hydrogenated at the hydrogenation center of the catalyst to generate MIBK. The reaction process can be expressed by the following formula: since the dual-functional catalyst has the functions of condensation dehydration and hydrogenation, there are also a small number of side reactions when the main reaction occurs. The main side reactions are as follows:

Literature 1 (Jinling Petrochemical, 1987 (5): 25) and 2 (Jinling Petrochemical, 1997, 3:14) of 2-methylpentane (2-MPA for short) introduced the production process of Hibernia Company in West Germany and Caoda Company in Deshan, Japan. The separation process in the production process of the two companies is basically the same, and both adopt the three-tower process, that is, the first tower is the acetone recovery tower, which recycles the excess acetone; The second tower is MIBK dehydration tower. The water generated by the reaction is azeotropic with MIBK, and the water is removed in the form of azeotrope; The third tower is the product tower, where the product comes from the top of the tower and the reconstituted component comes from the bottom of the tower.
