  Acrylonitrile is a colorless flammable liquid with irritating odor, toxic, slightly soluble in water and easily soluble in general organic solvents. It is a conjugated unsaturated nitrile, and the carbon-carbon double bond and cyano group in the molecule can participate in various reactions, such as hydration to acrylamide and acrylic acid, diene synthesis with dienes, hydrogenation to propionitrile and propylamine, copolymerization with acrylamide, electrolytic coupling to adiponitrile, and use as cyanoethylation reagent for alcohols and amines.

  Five roles and uses of acrylonitrile

  1. Acrylonitrile is an important raw material for organic synthesis. It is mainly used in the manufacture of polyacrylonitrile fiber (acrylic), nitrile rubber, ABS resin, AS resin, polyacrylamide, acrylates, adiponitrile, anti-water agents and adhesives, etc.

  2. It is used in other organic synthesis and pharmaceutical industry, and used as cereal fumigant, etc. In addition, it is also a non-protonic polar solvent.

  3. It is used as a monomer to produce polymers, such as polyacrylonitrile, acrylic fiber and nitrile rubber.

  4. Acrylonitrile can be used as a fumigant.

  5. Acrylonitrile and its derivatives into 2-chloro-acrylonitrile can undergo Diels-Alder reaction.
