[News & Trends]:What are the production methods and production processes of PS, and what are the commonly used raw materials

PS (polystyrene) is a common plastic material widely used in fields such as chemical, electronics, construction, and packaging. The manufacturing methods of PS mainly include suspension polymerization, lotion polymerization and bulk polymerization. Below, we will provide a detailed introduction to the manufacturing method of PS

1、 Suspension polymerization is a commonly used method for manufacturing PS, which involves adding styrene monomers, initiators, water, dispersants, and other raw materials together into a polymerization reactor. With stirring and nitrogen flow, the styrene monomers are dispersed into small droplets in water, and the initiators initiate polymerization reactions in the droplets to generate PS microspheres. Temperature and pH values need to be controlled during the reaction process to maintain a stable reaction environment

The advantage of suspension polymerization method is that it can obtain PS microspheres with uniform particle size and smooth surface, and the reaction heat is easily removed, which can control the reaction rate. However, this method requires a large amount of water and dispersants, resulting in high production costs and difficulty in wastewater treatment

2、 Lotion polymerization

lotion polymerization is to add styrene monomer, initiator, emulsifier and other raw materials into water to form lotion and then conduct polymerization under the action of initiator. During the reaction, it is necessary to maintain a certain temperature and pH value, and control the amount and type of emulsifier to obtain stable lotion and high-quality PS products

The advantage of lotion polymerization is that less initiator and emulsifier can be used, the production cost is low, and PS products with smaller particle size and uniform distribution can be obtained. However, the wastewater treatment of this method is relatively difficult and requires a large amount of water and energy consumption

3、 Ontology polymerization

Ontology polymerization is the process of adding styrene monomers, initiators, and other raw materials to a polymerization reactor for polymerization reaction at a certain temperature and pressure. This method does not require the addition of additives such as water or emulsifiers, thus obtaining high purity PS products

The advantages of ontology polymerization method are high product purity, high production efficiency, and relatively simple wastewater treatment. However, this method requires high temperature and pressure reaction conditions, requires high equipment requirements, and is prone to safety issues such as explosion polymerization during the reaction process

In summary, there are various manufacturing methods for PS, each with its own advantages, disadvantages, and applicability. In actual production, appropriate manufacturing methods should be selected based on specific situations and needs to ensure product quality and production efficiency. At the same time, with the continuous improvement of environmental awareness and the requirements of sustainable development, the manufacturing methods of PS should also be continuously improved and optimized to reduce energy consumption and waste emissions, and improve the efficiency of resource utilization.
