[News & Trends]:The production method and process flow of EPDM rubber, and what are the commonly used raw materials

The manufacturing method of ethylene propylene diene monomer (EPDM) is a widely used raw material for chemical production. Due to its excellent heat resistance, oxidation resistance, weather resistance, chemical corrosion resistance, and low-temperature flexibility, EPDM is widely used in fields such as automobiles, buildings, wires and cables, aerospace, etc. This article will provide a detailed introduction to the manufacturing method of EPDM rubber

2、 The main raw materials for manufacturing EPDM rubber include ethylene, propylene, and a small amount of non conjugated dienes. Among them, the ratio of ethylene to propylene can be adjusted according to actual needs, usually the ratio of ethylene to propylene is 1:2 or 1:1. The function of non conjugated dienes is to act as third monomers to improve the vulcanization rate and crosslinking density of rubber

3、 Polymerization reaction

1 Addition of initiator: The initiator can be added to the polymerization kettle using peroxides or azo compounds

2. Monomer addition: Add ethylene, propylene, and non conjugated diene monomers in proportion to the polymerization kettle

3. Polymerization reaction: Under the action of the initiator, the monomer begins to undergo polymerization reaction to produce EPDM rubber. The polymerization reaction needs to be carried out at a certain temperature and pressure, usually at a temperature of 50-80 ℃ and a pressure of 1-3MPa

4、 Post processing

1 Degassing: Remove unreacted monomers and low molecular weight volatiles from EPDM rubber by vacuum degassing or steam blowing

2. Extrusion granulation: The degassed EPDM rubber is granulated using an extruder to obtain rubber particles of a certain size

3. Drying: Dry the rubber particles to remove moisture and other impurities

5、 Quality inspection and packaging

1 Quality inspection: Conduct quality inspection on the produced EPDM rubber, including testing of indicators such as Mooney viscosity, molecular weight distribution, and vulcanization characteristics

2. Packaging: The qualified EPDM rubber will be packaged, usually in polyethylene plastic bags or paper plastic composite bags, with a net weight of 25kg or 50kg per bag

6、 Notes

1 During the polymerization process, it is necessary to strictly control temperature and pressure to ensure the smooth progress of the reaction and the quality of the product

During the post-processing, attention should be paid to preventing oxidation and aging of EPDM rubber to avoid affecting the performance and service life of the product

During the quality inspection process, it is necessary to strictly follow relevant standards and regulations for testing to ensure that the quality of the product meets the requirements

7、 Conclusion: The manufacturing method of EPDM rubber includes steps such as raw material preparation, polymerization reaction, post-treatment, quality inspection, and packaging. In the production process, it is necessary to strictly control the process parameters and operating points of each link to ensure the quality and performance of the product.
